Wow - this was the most amazing response to a post ever. I apparently hit something that has affected many of us. I have worked much harder to make sure I speak up and so far I have and it feels wonderful. I am trying to now censor myself as much and not think for anyone else about how they will feel if I say something. I hope we can all continue to learn to speak and if nothing else make sure we speak to each other when we need to. Thank you all for your honesty and love.
The Need to Speak
The Book of Awakening - Mark Nepo
So many times we suppose ourselves out of existence, imagining that if we speak our heart we will be rejected or ignored.
I watched a man reach to call a friend, excited to share a deep idea that had overcome him. But as the phone was ringing, I saw him imagine a cool reception, saw him try on the pain of not being heard, and quickly, with a sigh of deflation, he hung up before the fourth ring.
Still, the expression - whether misunderstood, well received, or rejected - matters. For the cost of not making the call is that a piece of us dies. Consider how fish swim and birds fly. They do so because it is in their nature. For it is the swimming and the flying that makes them fish and birds.
Likewise, it is the speaking of one's heart that makes a human being human. For even of no one hears us, it is the act of speaking that frees us by letting the spirit swim and fly through the world.
- Sit quietly and allow yourself to be still as lake water when there is no wind.
- Breathe slowly and look into yourself. Look to your [core].
- Inhale deeply and feel whatever rises up from your [core].
- Exhale cleanly and, though you are alone, speak what you are feeling, aloud to yourself. (or please feel free to voice yourself in the comments)
I do this all too often in my life. I think why would they want to hear that? They are going to laugh at me. They are not even going to have time to listen to me. They are going to think I am silly. They will think I am tooting my own horn. They will think I am too depressing to listen to.
I have many times picked up the phone only put it back down again. I have started emails only to erase them. I have even started texts and tweets only to erase them too. Why? Why do I not trust my friends to listen? Or is it me I don't trust? I don't ever want to be boastful, so I don't call with good news. I don't ever want to be a burden, so I don't call with bad news. But isn't that what friendship is for and all about?
I have many things inside me that I want to put sound to but I don't. I sit in silence. I watch as the world moves around me and I listen but I don't speak. Wow, major aha moment - it is what I loved and hated so much about Kristen Stewart's movie "Speak." She was amazing in that movie, without speaking she said so much but I was so mad at her for not actually speaking. Why am I not mad at myself them? Granted I am not in the situation she was in in the movie but still, why should I sit silent but condemn another for the same?
If you also do this, why do you do it? What aren't you saying?

I just wrote this really long comment that Blogger ate. Hmpf. The jist was that I do this all the time. I just can't imagine anyone being interested in anything I say. I guess Blogger just reinforced that theory.
Oh TK I am so sorry. I don't know why Blogger has to be so mean. I always want to hear what you have to say. You have such a unique voice and I love it. Your voice is always welcome here - no matter what Blogger does.
I often stay silent because of how others view black women. As a bald, black woman many think I'm militant. I'm so not.
Even when I'm in the right I often be quiet because I want to make it easier for the next woman of color who comes after me. But in turn, I don't change anyone's stereotypes - they most likely will have them regardless if I say something or not.
I also, stay quiet because I often don't feel like I'm contributing anything of worth to the conversation. I ramble, I get distracted and I don't want to appear dumb. But, I use my blog as a way to stand up without putting a face or a color to my opinions and that feels wonderful.
Wow. This blog post just made me actually say "wow" outloud. It was like reading my thoughts. I have dreams. Lots of them. Mainly it's what I spend my days in life doing; thinking about what I should be or could be but then somehow I never get there. I don't speak out about the things I want so badly in life because I feel like if I say them outloud and then I don't accomplish them, it will mean I failed. If I keep quiet, they just stay dreams inside of me. <----I never noticed this about myself until just now. Literally. Looks like I need a journal. Or a blog.
BTW, I always want to hear what all of you say. Always always. It's what I'm here for. I finally feel like I found more friends who are uplifting and positive. Supportive, genuine people are very hard to find nowadays and I'm so grateful I've finally found it in this community of awesome ladies.
I second jaymes' WOW! I've been quiet for a while, sometimes because I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing or think no one wants to hear from me or sometimes for no real reason but I think it's time to stop quieting my own voice. I love listening to all of you, you always seem so much more insightful or wittier than I.
I love this post. Do you know how many times I start a blog post or have an idea for a blog post, and then go through the thought that nobody will want to read that. It's so bad, I've even considered shutting down my True Blood Twilight blog. But besides blogging, I go through this ALL the time. Afraid to say something wrong on Facebook, afraid to pitch my ideas at work, etc...
Thank you for your positive message. I know I'm just complaining about trivial things, but truly, your post is a "must" read for all young women. Never be afraid to speak up!
First, thank you all for speaking up. It is lovely to hear you.
Second, I had a fear that this was a common thread for many of us.
Third, I adore each of you.
@TK - again I apologize for Blogger.
@missTejota - I am glad you allow me to hear your voice and I am grateful that you have your blog for an outlet. One thing I work very hard to do is to not judge before knowing. I always hated when people assumed I was dumb because I am blonde, so I work hard to not to that to others.
@Jaymes - obviously two blogs isn't freeing your voice - so a journal may in order. I used to write in one every day but I have even gotten away from that. Hmmmm
@inotu - I guarantee that you are just as witty and wonderful as the rest of this crazy bunch ;) Speak up!
@Suz - I didn't even put that about deleting blog posts. Please don't delete your blog - it is one of my favorites. I LOVE reading your reviews, your thoughts and especially the stories of your family/children.
You all have amazing voices and I am grateful that I get to hear them.
Once again, I wanted to say great post.
Beautiful post, DD!
2.5 years ago I was struggling to figure out who I was, and was really going through a transition in my life. I was afraid of upsetting everyone, so I said very little and wasn't really myself, because I didn't know who I really was (a huge departure from teenage me, who had a huge ego and would say anything to anyone. College kinda killed my self-esteem). The past two(ish) years that I've spent first observing all of you from afar and then joining the conversation on Twitter have been nothing short of transformational for me. I feel like this is such an outspoken group, and I love that. You all have made me feel more empowered to speak my mind. Now, as I'm not far from entering my 30s, I feel like I have a much better idea of who the real me is and I'm much less afraid to expose her to the world. So, thank you to all of you for being brave, even if you don't see yourself that way. You've made me brave, too.
I really liked Speak too. :)In fact, I would like to see it again soon.
I say only as much as I want to say and... leave out all the rest. (that's a Twilight song ref) But I enjoy being immersed in this group/world and sharing in what others are saying.
